A consultant to the NYPD bomb squad and world-renown bomb disposal expert; Stillman is called in to assist Seal Team 10 in dismantling a series of bombs planted by Dead Cell's Fatman. He takes it upon himself to personally investigate the final and most deadly bomb on the Big Shell. But, as Snake points out, he's injured. His bad leg will get him caught for sure! Ah, tragically his bum leg is only a crutch, an excuse he used to dodge the guilt of allowing a church to explode killing all of it's occupants. The tragedy haunts every moment of Sillman's life. In strut H, Stillman once again fails to diffuse the bomb in time and he dies over an eerie codec transmission. His only reconciliation is that his efforts to assist Raiden and Pliskin prevented the entire Shell from collapsing.
9. Olga (Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty)
Olga, like most Metal Gear characters, is caught up in a whirling mess of political conflict. We understand her loyalty to her father, Sergei Gurlukovich and her love for her comrades in the private Russian army and her new born child. The plot takes a turn when we learn that her newly born baby girl has been taken hostage by the Patriots. The plot deepens when we learn that her child's life is dependent upon Raiden's survival. She makes a desperate effort to save Raiden from a Metal Gear Ray piloted by Solidus. Solidus comes skating in - kind of like Brian Boitano - grabs Olga's neck with his tentacle and quickly puts a bullet through her skull. Probably the most gruesome death on this list.
8. Big Boss (Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake)
The year is 1999. Big Boss is holed up in Zanzibar Land as he attempts to create his dream, Outer Heaven. Snake soon learns of Big Boss' presence and his plans to perpetuate world war with Metal Gear and Dr. Marv's OILIX. After defeating Metal Gear and fighting Grey Fox hand-to-hand in a room riddled with landmines, Snake hears a looming, distance voice, "Over here, Snake!" It's Big Boss. Big Boss is fully armed and Snake has no equipment. Big Boss goes on his tirade about how neither he nor Snake can survive in the "real" world and that war provides the only meaning in their lives. But, Snake doesn't care, or understand what he's talking about. Snake just wants to put an end to the nightmares he has about Big Boss. Since Snake is unarmed he must be resourceful and use what he can find to win. Luckily - and this is why Big Boss' death is so memorable - Snake finds a lighter and a can of spray. Yes, that's right. Big Boss, even though he's equipped with a machine gun, is killed by Snake who burns him with a lighter and hairspray.
7. The End (Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater)
As Snake roams into South Sokrovenno he's met with the booming salutation of The End. He is sleeping at first and is awakened by his parrot and the entrance of Snake into his primal domain. He is thankful for this final opportunity to hunt one last worthy prey. The End is a master sniper and so will not show himself so easily. Eva says he's lying in wait in one of three separate areas, Snake must use his stealth abilities and his patience to win this one. On the contrary, Snake's a busy dude so he saves the game and decides to kill The End this weekend when he doesn't have so much homework. Upon returning to South Sokrovenno almost a week later Snake finds The End - frozen in wait. He sneaks behind him and holds him up saying, "Drop your weapon! Drop you weapon..." The End collapses, dead from old age. Once again Kojima subverts our expectations and reminds us all that we play video games on his terms
6. Vulcan Raven (Metal Gear Solid)"Welcome Kasak!" Raven exclaims. He's only partially aware of the beat-down that will leave him bloody and battered beneath his own circling ravens. The cannon-clad behemoth may be little less than the ultimate fighting machine, but his mortal disposition becomes prey for Snakes murderous inhumanity. As Raven sits against a frozen wall - while his Ravens draw nearer - he tells Snake that his flesh will become one with the Ravens, in that way he'll return to the mother earth that bore him. He admits that in nature there is no such thing as boundless slaughter. But, he adds, "You, Snake, are different. There is no end to the path you walk. It is paved with the corpses of your enemies." Snake turns his back as the ravens close on their feast. A fury of black feathers and squawks leave nothing behind but Raven's crippled weapon
5. Fortune (Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty)Fortune is notorious for her invulnerability. Throughout the entire game she survives waves of bullets without batting an eye. At the end of the game we're pretty sure she can't be defeated - especially after she appears dragging around a handcuffed Snake. She admits to her plan to hijack Arsenal Gear. Ocelot then tells her that the entire operation was a simulation and her "misfortune" was for nothing. Angrily, Fortune draws her rail gun. Ocelot draws his revolver and quickly shoots her. This time the bullet doesn't miss and she drops to the ground - shot through the chest. Her fortune was the result of a tiny device that is now attached to Ocelot's hip. It seems hopeless for the rest of the cast as Ocelot mans a surviving Metal Gear Ray. Out of nowhere Fortune climbs to her feet and stretches her hands out. Fortune somehow deflects Ray's entire payload away from the cast. Afterward she collapses with no life left in her body. A truly worthy Metal Gear Death.
4. Grey Fox (Metal Gear Solid)Fox and Snake share a troubled past - sometimes allies and sometimes enemies. At this point in the saga it's hard to tell if Fox wants to kill Snake or if he wants Snake to kill him. We learn that Fox suffers incredibly in his exoskeleton and that he had been kept drugged for years while scientists performed genetic research on him. Just seconds before Metal Gear Rex's foot comes crashing down on Snake's head, Fox appears to push him out of the way. Fox and Rex battle for a few second before Fox gets pinned to a wall. He confesses to Snake that the two of them have, and always will, fight as mere pawns in a game played out by politicians. Fox falls to the ground and is finished by Rex's foot. Snake yells his name but it's too late, Fox is dead and for good.
3. Sniper Wolf (Metal Gear Solid)Wolf lays lung-shot, gasping for air in the frozen Alaskan winter. Snake and Otacon both kneel beside her awaiting her final words. It's hard to feel bad for Wolf after what she'd done to Meryl. Otacon had pleaded with Snake not to fight Wolf, but that just wasn't going to happen, this bitch had to die. She begins to tell Snake that she has been waiting for this moment, this final moment where she could reconcile her past. She grew up, like the rest of the cast, on a battlefield. Days and weeks were spent fleeing. She'd wake everyday to find more of her family and friends dead. Every morning she prayed to make it through the day. She asks for her gun. Otacon retrieves it for her. Snake points his gun down towards her head. The shot echoes across the island as wolfs are heard howling in the distance. Otacon wimpers and the duo continues on to Metal Gear.
2. The Boss (Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater)The Boss lies in a turbulent sea of white flowers. Snake approaches and kneels beside her. Only moments before, The Boss had confessed to Snake that she had been betrayed by her country during the invasion at the Bay of Pigs. She tells about her pregnancy during the Normandy invasion and how the Philosophers took her baby boy after he was born. She was a tool for the government and nothing else. She had lived a life of terrible pain and sacrifice all in the name of defending an institution that would inevitably turn its back on her. Now, in the midst of battle with her only apprentice, she can die. An overwhelming feeling of sorrow and regret overcomes Snake as The Boss hands him her Patriot and tells him to kill her. Of course, the drama isn't left to the cut-scene. At this point the game gives control to the player, who must pull the trigger.
1. Emma Emmerich (Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty)Snake, Otacon and Raiden are all gathered around a half-conscious Emma Emmerich. She had just crossed the oil fence connecting shells one and two. As she reached the end, that bastard Vamp showed up and took her hostage. Raiden sniped him back into the water but it was too late - Vamp stabbed her. In the computer room we learn that her vital organs have been damaged and there's no way to stop the bleeding. Otacon kneels and embraces Emma to comfort her in her last moments. She mutters her final words to Otacon. She confesses that everything she did was to get closer to Otacon. She wanted him to look at her as a woman. She takes the glasses from his face and asks not to be called E.E. With that she drops the glasses and dies. But it doesn't end there. Otacon takes Emma's parrot on his arm. The parrot repeatedly cries Otacon's name and finally quotes, "I miss you." as if Emma is speaking through it. Otacon utterly loses it. This is desperate moment captured an emotional quality that has hardly been touched by any other game.

Emma? EMMAAAAAAAAAA!!!!
Great list!
Vulcan Raven's death is my personal favorite MG demise--who designed this site btw? It looks hot.
Sniper Wolf is the shit. "Gunfire, sirens and screams...they were my lullabies." That's deep and demented--I like.
Even though the character wasn't a major one, the DARPA chief unexpectedly being offed by Foxdie in Metal Gear Solid was pretty cool.
No one but the GamePro staff is interested in this article? You guys don't get much love from the members, do ya? LOL!
[p]Nice article, but nothing compares to Aeris' death. I still cry myself to sleep every night... T_T
I'll admit it - I cried at Emma's death. And I'm eager for MGS4 so I can finally get revenge on Vamp for it.
Emma's death was just horrible. poor otacon! i became more emotionally attached Otacon afterwards. damn parrot!
It should have been sniper wolf for number one! I don't know if it was the wolves howling in the background or what, but that got to me. I made snake fall into the lava after that....the bastard!
