Weapon Wednesdays: Metal Gear Solid - MAC-10

Sep. 10 5:01 PM by Dylan Duarte

The MAC-10 is featured in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and is used by some of the South American rebels. All around, it's far from the best gun, but here at OMG Metal Gear we don't judge, we simply inform.

Click onward to be informed.

The MAC-10, fully titled Military Armament Corporation Model 10, is a compact submachine gun (also known as a machine pistol) with multiple fire modes. It was developed in 1964 by Gordon B. Ingram and was in service from 1970 to 1975 in the US and Brazil. US Special Forces used them in the Vietnam War.

Due to its simple design, it was easy to produce and easy to maintain. However, their compact size and high rate of fire but them very difficult to control. This is accurately portrayed in Metal Gear Solid 4, as the gun has horrible accuracy. This is the leading factor in the gun never becoming very popular in the military.

One key advantage of the MAC-10 was its revolutionary sound suppressor, which was designed by Mitchell Werbell III, an OSS and CIA operative, mercenary, firearms engineer, and arms dealer. The unique silencer designer, as pictured above, made the gun so quiet that the bolt could be heard above the actual discharge. The large silencer also made the weapon easier to hold, as operators would place one hand under the silencer itself.

During the 1970s, the US placed restrictions on suppressor exportation, causing numerous countries to cancel their orders as the gun's silencer was the major selling point. Eventually this, along with additional restrictions placed on automatic weapons, caused Military Armament Company to go bankrupt.

And that's the end of that story.

Meh, still an ugly gun. You can find semi auto versions of them out there, but there's no point.

It definitely is a goofy looking gun.
